PHUKET: The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) has countered fears that the island is once again running out of fresh water because of the record numbers of tourists arriving in the long dry season.
A number of government agencies have voiced concern that the huge numbers of tourists are putting unsustainable strain on the island’s water resources and shortages are inevitable. But PWA office director Pisak Cholyut insisted that the PWA is confident that supply from Bang Wad reservoir in Kathu – which currently contains six million cubic metres of water, more than in most years – is sufficient to meet demand from Kathu and Phuket Town.
The PWA is not sitting on its laurels, however. The Klong Krata reservoir in Chalong has been dogged with problems going back almost a decade, but work is now 50 per cent complete and is expected to be finished next year.
