Hi guys, I am in serious need for advice. We went to Atlantis yesterday afternoon for a quick outing, me with my Defender and a friend with his 80 series Cruiser. We had a real pleasant drive, no serious challenges though due to the sand being quite hard. Just before we came home we decided to go to die gat. On my turn, I went in, did some of the obsticles and with the last one, suddenly a power loss. Revved the engine a bit and all seemed maytag water filter fine but I still decided to play it safe and get out. First attempt, power loss again. Revved a bit and on the second attempt got out, no problem. While I told Ernst (my friend) about the power loss the car died. My first thought was the fuel pump. I could not hear the fuel pump when switching the ignition on. Phoned Gerrit (Handy Landy) for some tips as to what to look for but with no luck. At the end Ernst towed me from Atlantis home in Langeberg Heights. When we got here eventually and unhooked the Landie I turne the key again, just for the hell of it. It started as if there was nothing wrong! Can anyone please share some light on this? I m taking it to Gerrit anyway to have it checked out __________________ maytag water filter Jannie ( GP0306-WC) Fortuner V6 - Dual battery, Ironman suspension, 90l NL, Hannibal roofrack, 50 liter water tank Corolla d4d 110 Defender 2.8i 161Kw , 180l long range tanks, NL Weekender, KC Daylighters (Sadly maytag water filter sold but lots of fond memories)
Sounds like lumpy petrol I'm not familiar with the 2.8i, but I had the same problem with my V8 (carb version) a couple of years back. It would go for weeks on end with no problem, and then suddenly start cutting out. Turned out to be intermittent fuel pump failure, which is a real swine because on the V8 the pump is inside the petrol tank. After installing a new one, I also fitted a spare one on the fuel line just above the carb, mounted onto the fire wall. That way, if the tank pump fails again in a remote spot, I can simply connect that one and pump from there. In my last Series IIA, I had my fuel pump fail on me in northern Kenya,. I gravity fed the carb from a fuel hose siphoning from a Jerry can until I could find a new pump. The other thing to look at is dirt or paint in the fuel - drain and flush your fuel tank. __________________ Tony Weaver 1991 Land Rover 110 Hi-Line S/W 3.5l V8 carburettor Cooper Discoverer STT tyres, maytag water filter four sleeper Echo rooftop tent 2006 Land Rover Freelander TD4 HSE (2 litre BMW motor) Previously Land Rover 1969 SIIA, 1968 SII, 1973 SIII and 1983 Toyota HiLux 2litre.

Quote: Probably a fuel blockage somewhere. Thanks for your replies. I do agree that it may have been but why were the fuel pump completely dead? Normally, if you switch the ignition on you can hear the pump at the back of the Landy but yesterday while having this problem the pump was dead silent and only when I turned maytag water filter the key here at home I could here the pump again... As far as i know, the pump on the 2.8i is also in the tank. __________________ Jannie maytag water filter ( GP0306-WC) Fortuner V6 - Dual battery, Ironman suspension, 90l NL, Hannibal roofrack, 50 liter water tank Corolla maytag water filter d4d 110 Defender 2.8i 161Kw , 180l long range tanks, NL Weekender, KC Daylighters (Sadly sold but lots of fond memories)
Tony funny to read your post now,was on my way to Loftus yesterday with the Landy, and while driving was thinking what thing would leave me stranded, and it would be the petrol pump, the jerry can would have been my solution as well!I am sure the problem with the 2.8i will be the fuel pump, did it not suck in air while on an incline or something and then struggled to start again? __________________ Honda CR-V Series 3 Landy Land Cruiser 4.2D work

Could be one of the above. I'm leaning towards an electrical cause for the pump to just suddenly go dead. It might be the relay. I'll wait to hear from the workshop today, maytag water filter it may sound strange but I hope they find something wrong somewhere otherwise I'll always have this occurance at the back of my head... __________________ maytag water filter Jannie ( GP0306-WC) Fortuner V6 - Dual battery, Ironman suspension, 90l NL, Hannibal roofrack, 50 liter water tank Corolla d4d 110 Defender 2.8i 161Kw , 180l long range tanks, NL Weekender, KC Daylighters (Sadly sold but lots of fond memories)

There is an inertia switch fitted against the bulkhead (think it's on the right) designed to cut off the fuel supply to the engine in the event of an accident. If you went through maytag water filter a ditch at speed or anything similar the switch might cut out. It has a little rubber button on the top to reset it. Al petrol engined fuel injection LR's have this fitted and it catches many people out after small fender benders. You can test it by bangin it lightly with a spanner and the engine will cut out. I do think though that if it was this it would stop working completely the first time and not allow you to still rev it and it doesn't reset itself either. maytag water filter 2.8's have an appet
